The Bank of the United States, in an early attempt at an American central bank (1816-36), was abolished by President Andrew Jackson, who believed that it threatened the nation. “If congress has the right under the Constitution to issue paper money, it was given them to use themselves, not to be delegated to individuals or to corporations.” He further warned , "The bold effort the present bank had made to control the government, the distress it had wantonly produced...are but premonitions of the fate that awaits the American people should they be deluded into a perpetuation of this institution or the establishment of another like it." Andrew Jackson

Despite these warnings, Woodrow Wilson signed the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, a central banking system owned outright by private interests, who themselves have a longstanding affiliation [even a subjugation] to international interests. A few years later Wilson wrote: I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men. - Woodrow Wilson

He went on; "Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it." - Woodrow Wilson

By the time of the depression Roosevelt formally petitioned congress with the reality of the threat to democracy. He said that with 5% of the nation's business owning 87% of its assets the liberty of democracy was at risk.

He went on to warn the people if they continue to tolerate a private sector whose power rivaled that of the government the personal liberties ensured by democracy were at risk. He strongly advised against such concentration. "If the nations business is to be allotted by plan and not competition, that power should not be vested in any private group or cartel no matter how benevolent they appear". To allow a few to rule the economic life of the rest is problematic, and so power must be diffused within the entire market, or shouldered by government itself who represents a democratically achieved mandate.

"To meet the situation I have described, there should be a thorough study of the concentration of economic power in American industry and the effect of that concentration upon the decline of competition". And so in June /38 the congress established the Temporary National Economic Committee with a $500,000 budget, which was doubled before the report was tabled when the magnitude of the undertaking was better realized.

In a letter written Nov. 21, 1933 to Colonel E. Mandell House, Roosevelt confided;"The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the large centers has owned the government of the U.S. since the days of Andrew Jackson."- U.S. President Franklin D.

In an address to a Trilateral Commission meeting in June of 1991; "We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected the promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world-government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the National auto determination practiced in past centuries"- David Rockefeller

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword.
